Description
EVE ARNOLD (1912–2012) | Marlene Dietrich recording, New York 1952 | Vintage silver print, double-weight semi-matte paper, in good condition 23,3 x 29,7 cm Photographer’s agency stamps and negative no. stamp “52-2-3”, handwritten “Rollei” and other annotations in pencil on the reverse LITERATURE Eve Arnold, The unretouched Woman, New York 1976; Eve Arnold, Film Journal, Cahiers du Cinéma 2001, p. 18; Brigitte Lardinois (ed.), Eve Arnold’s People, London 2009, p. 26f. At the time of recording at Columbia Record’s studios in November 1952, Dietrich was working on a comeback. It was a cold and rainy night and work could not begin until midnight, on the advice of her astrologer who joined her. She was the first star Eve Arnold extensively photographed ‘in action’. The photographer accompanied all phases of the production until 6 o’clock in the morning. Although Dietrich demanded retouching, Arnold refused. This photograph was published (among others of the series) in the magazine Esquire, establishing her success with candid, ‘unretouched’ celebrity portraits.
