L.B. Cole's cover features a jungle queen and her elephant pal fighting off poachers. Cole had a tough childhood, even by Great Depression standards, having been essentially abandoned by his parents after they divorced when he was 14. From an early age, Cole was drawn to animals, finding in them a sort of surrogate family: "I guess I found the love that was missing from my family in animals... I would have drawn pictures of my mother and father. Instead, I drew pictures of dogs and cats and horses." As Bill Schelly wrote in his monogram on Cole, "Cole's longtime love of animal portraiture and illustration is evident on many covers. Nine of the dozen covers on Terrors of the Jungle feature animals... all rendered with special care and complete anatomical accuracy."
