Description
Washington Allston (1779-1843), copy of Joseph Wright of Derby's famous painting Indian Widow of 1783-84. An engraving of this painting was made by John Raphael Smith in 1785. Another copy of the Wright of Derby painting, signed by Benjamin West, sold and was recorded in Maine Antique Digest, 2021. It is possible that each artist viewed the painting while in England but they could also have painted their copies after the engraving. Size: 20'' x 24'', 51 x 61 cm (stretcher). Provenance: Ex-collection of the Andrew D. White Museum, Cornell University (partial label on the back); Private Pennsylvania Collection.
