DESCRIPTION: "Colorado, View on Clear Creek". Howard Alpheus Streight (American, 1836-1912). Oil on canvas. Signed lower center. In ornate gilt frame. Note to back of frame "Scene in Colorado view on Clear Creek by W. (sic) A. Streight Purchased April 1997 By Liv. Riedel $1.00". After serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, Howard Alpheus Streight taught painting and drawing at the Chicago Female College. He later moved to Colorado where he was inspired by the Rockies. Streight claimed to have painted by supernatural guidance and often held seances in his studio. MEASUREMENTS: 15-5/8" wide x 9-3/4" high; frame 2-1/4" wide. CONDITION: Loss of paint to lower edge from center to right. Craquelure. Losses to frame, especially at top center and upper right corner.
