AN IMPORTANT GOLDEN HORDE HELMET
Item Details
Description
The fine, handwrought decagonal steel bowl tapering continuously toward the peak, and expanding slightly below the beaded finial. With deep semicircular openings for the eyes set with an applied wrought reinforce which further captures the nasal guard. Finely chiseled and inlaid in teh-i-neshan (true inlay) in silver with Sura 112 from the Qur’an, the Sura of Sincerity: SAY, “HE IS ALLAH, WHO IS ONE,” ALLAH, THE ETERNAL REFUGE, HE NEITHER BEGETS NOR IS BORN, NOR IS THERE TO HIM, ANY EQUIVALENT (The Noble Quran, Khan & al-Hilali, 1990.) The en suite nasal guard rusted in the socket. The periphery punched with a series of apertures for a camail. Bearing a paper label to the interior with KAUFMANN’S ANTIQUES and the stamped inventory number 2245. Provenanced with an accompanying photocopy of the letter of authenticity which identifies the source as Kaufmann’s Antiques, Tel Aviv, Israel on January 21, 1967, and states this helmet, inventory number 2245, was “purchased in Turkestan, 1935.” Mid-14th century and later. Rusted, with areas of corrosion overall. Camail contemporary. Nasal possibly a period replacement. Height of helmet only 22cm. A helmet of the same type in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, is identified as Blue Horde, belonging to Jani Beg, Khan of the Blue Horde (and ultimately, the Golden Horde.) The Metropolitan Museum example is embellished in silver koftgari, or surface inlay, and bears the name of Jani Beg (r. 1342-1357c.e.) Both helmets appear to be the work of the same shop, likely Kubachi, which was noted for its master armorers. By comparison, the Metropolitan Museum example is in a relatively poor state of preservation. Compare with last image below. PLEASE NOTE: THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM EXAMPLE. THE PHOTO IS SHOWN ONLY FOR REFERENCE.
