Description
In the village of Kozak situated north of Bergama, small-format rugs were woven in geometric designs that bring to mind Caucasian weavings. The villagers allegedly immigrated from the Kazak region some time ago, hence the name of the village. On the central axis of the red field, there are two box shapes decorated with four arrows and divided into four inner segments which resemble certain Shahsavan güls. Six light green bracket forms surround the primary motifs. The leaf and calyx vine in the white-ground border is similarly Caucasian in character. The mellow patinated colours indicate an early date. The rug was purchased at Galerie Eberhart Herrmann, Munich, in 1979. – Slight signs of age and wear, original finishes all around, damage to the lower kilim end.
