Gouache (or tempera) on newspaper mounted to thin cardboard, untitled (reclining woman), signed* and inscribed (Willem de Kooning, 1904-1997). 9 1/2 x 9 5/8 inches. Very good condition with the exception of slight paint losses along the four edges of the picture. Comes with original frame and backing, circa mid-late 1950s. Name and address notation by original owner on reverse. Sold framed.

Provenance: Robert Payne, NYC. Acquired by the current owner's father from Robert Payne's estate in 1969. Thence by descent to consignor.

Lot Notes: Robert Payne met Willem de Kooning in the early 1950s, at the same time he met the consignor's father. Payne and the consignor's father were neighbors in New York City and became long-time friends. When Mr. Payne died in 1969, the consignor's father acquired this small painting from Robert Payne's estate.

Condition Note: This painting was originally framed under glass. At the suggestion of an art restorer, we removed the glass to prevent any further damage along the edges of the picture, some of which had adhered to the glass.
