Description
Vintage porcelain demitasse, small coffee cup, cobalt and gold, by C.M. Hutschenreuther, Hohenberg, Germany. This particular mark with 'Bayern' [Bavaria] instead of Germany was in use 1948-1969. Matching gold hand-written product numbers on both, cup and saucer. The saucer has an additional distributor mark 'M. Commes. Coblenz.'
The saucer is 4.1/2" [11.4cm] across, fine. The cup is 1.1/2" [3.8cm] tall and 2.3/4" [7cm] across at the top, there is some wear, especially the upper golden edge, very good condition.
The Lorenz Hutschenreuther, Selb and C. M. Hutschenreuther, Hohenberg were two totally independent companies until their merger in 1969. Both were located in state of Bavaria, Germany.
Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther porcelain factory started production in 1814. It was established by Hutschenreuther in Bavarian town Hohenberg an der Eger. Hutschenreuther employed artists, craftsmen and sculptors from all over continental Europe focusing on quality and design.
Lorenz Hutschenreuther, Carolus' son, opened in 1857 another porcelain factory in Bavarian town of Selb. Lorenz and Carolus, son and father, were competitors and didn't cooperate.
In 1969, Lorenz Hutschenreuther Company purchased C. M. Hutschenreuther, the combined company was renamed Porzellanfabriken Lorenz Hutschenreuther AG Selb. In 1972, Hutschenreuther merged with Porcelain Factory Kahla AG of Schonwald. This merger brought Kahla's two ceramics factories into the business, along with the well-known trademarks Arzberg and Schonwald.
