Description
This sensual illustration from Umberto Brunelleschi (1879-1949) was part of Rene Groos (1898-1972) Memoires De Jacques Casanova De Seingalt, the work was edited by Gibert Jeune and published in 1955 in Paris, and was a limited edition of 3000 on vellum paper de Condat.
Umberto Brunelleschi is a post-symbolist painter who uses decorative scenes to express his talent.
He studied at the Beaux Arts in Florence and then moved to Paris in 1900, collaborated as a caricaturist in many publications: Le Rire, L'Assiette au beurre, Les Feuillets d'Art, and exhibited his works in Parisian salons.
Back in Italy, he became familiar with the work of illustrator and contributed to luxury magazines such as Femina, La Gazette du bon ton and George Barbier, La Guirlande. Brunelleschi's drawing is always subtle and neat, with a very linear and fine layout.
From the 20s, he became one of the leading figures of Italian art deco and created costumes for the Bataclan from 1914 to 1922, the Folies Bergere from 1923 to 1936, the Casino de Paris or the Scala in Milan. He gained international fame, notably for his costumes by Josephine Baker.
After the war, he seems to have devoted himself to the illustration of erotic editions. He died in 1949.
