TSUZEN NAKAJIMA (1944-) was born in and lives in Asakusa, Tokyo, where his family has resided for generations. Such a person is referred to as "edokko" in Japanese, which literally means "a person from Edo" (the former name for Tokyo). His father was a Buddhist monk, and mother the daughter of a lacquerer. He graduated from Waseda University with a degree in Art and Literature. Nakajima began creating woodblock prints when he was 16. Since then he has established a unique style which he calls "hangiga," with translucent colors and a wood grain texture. He has exhibited his work internationally since 2000, and in 2006 his work was used exclusively for every cover of the monthly magazine "Voice".
