Description
1855 1ed Huc CHINA Voyages Catholic Missions Tibet Magic Confucianism Astrology
Evariste Regis Huc was a 19th-century French Catholic missionary who created European interest in Asian studies with his famous written account of China, Tartary, and Tibet – A Journey Through the Chinese Empire. This book garnered an unusually high amount of popularity – it discussed manners and religion of Tibet and compared these Buddhist practices to Catholic traditions. Devout Catholics were highly disappointed with Hucs comparison even though they appreciated the historical aspects of Journey. Huc also discusses Confucianism and Taoism as well as practices of magic, astrology, and necromancy.
