Description
A black basalt bust of Minerva, with base marked "Wedgwood App" (indicating year 1861 or 1887) - a type of stoneware made popular by Wedgwood after 1769. This version was designed by William Hackwood, one of Wedgwood's modelers. Hackwood was clearly inspired by the Giustiniani Minerva, a Roman work itself modeled after an earlier classical Greek sculpture of the goddess Athena. Busts of this popular cult figure were listed for sale in Wedgwood and Bentley's catalog as of 1779.
