Description
West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A fine collection of a brass currency rings threaded on a leather cord with cowrie shells attached to the ends which could be worn as a belt. The 72 rings are cast via the lost wax method and incised with crosshatching lines then strung between knotted leather strips as a belt or necklace with 6 cowrie shells tied to the tassel ends. The rings were used as trade and currency pieces that could be worn as decorative status symbols of wealth. Size (belt): 31.75" L (80.6 cm); (rings): 1" Diameter x 0.125" W (2.5 cm x 0.3 cm)

Condition
Rings are intact and very good. Patina and toning on all. Some cracking, tearing, and fraying to leather, but all rings and shells are secure. Overall great condition. Not recommended for wearing due to leather's age.
