Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Gulf Coast Region, Veracruz (Vera Cruz) culture, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A nice set of 2 hand-built pottery figures from the ancient Veracruz culture. First is a squat figure who stands atop attenuated legs and has an impressed belt and loincloth, a shell-form pendant, and a nodule-adorned headdress. Black pigment embellishes the eyes, thighs, and chest. The larger fragmentary figure presents with a deeply corseted and elongated waist and a necklace lined with shell-form beads. The massive head features protruding eyes, full lips, a large ear spool, and a bow-form headband, and applied black pigment decorates the eyes and brows. Taller figure is a fragment of a larger composition as shown; squat figure is intact and very good. Taller figure has losses to right leg and portion of left leg, areas of necklace, one earspool, and part of headband. Both figures have light abrasions and fading to some applied pigment. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
