Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, East Java, Majapahit, ca. 1294 to 1478 CE. This is a lovely two-part terracotta stupa reliquary that features a simple and elegant domed profile incised with rings and ridges along the neck base and finial lid. The lid resembles a spiraling pagoda, and fits atop the conical tip of the body, covering the annular opening and hollow interior of the stupa. The main bell-shaped body has a thick spool-form base and a wide opening that also leads into the hollow interior. The form of the stupa is also intended to echo the shape of the crowned Buddha sitting upon a throne, and model stupas were used by Buddhists as devotional items for storing relics or as votive offerings for shrines and temples. Size: 3.25" Diameter x 5.5" H (8.3 cm x 14 cm)
