A watercolor on paper theater costume sketch for the ballet Le Malade imaginaire or The Imaginary Invalid, attributed to Alexander Benois, Russian, French, 1870 to 1960. Signed in the Cyrillic lower left, titled in Latin upper right. Housed in a thin metal frame. Alexandre Nikolayevich Benois was a Russian artist, art critic, historian, preservationist and founding member of Mir iskusstva, an art movement and magazine. As a designer for the Ballets Russes under Sergei Diaghilev, Benois exerted what is considered a seminal influence on the modern ballet and stage design.
