Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Tlingit or Haida people, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful hair comb made from mountain goat or sheep horn with the handle carved into a stylized totemic head. The square face is perhaps an orca (killer whale) or some other symbolic animal of strength and power, the eye set with a shimmering nacre shell. Below are 9 tines or teeth and the verso is flat and unadorned. Combs served several purposes, firstly for combing, hygiene, and securing hair in place, and the effigy handles were not only decorative but symbolic with ancestral totems and clan affiliations to imbue the wearer with strength or power. Size: 3.125" L x 1.65" W (7.9 cm x 4.2 cm)
