Description
An encased piece of lignum vitae, wood taken from the HMS Victory's cockpit. Top mounted with sterling silver presentation plate, hallmarked for London, 1903, maker's mark rubbed slightly.
Inscription reads: "The Date October 23rd 1803 being two days after the 98th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar / "God be praised / I have done my duty" / Wood from the "Victory's" cockpit, in which Lord Nelson breathed his last. Removed in the course of repairs, necessitated by the old ship being accidentally rammed in Portsmouth Harbour, by HMS Neptune. The latter originally the Brazilian battleship "Independencia" - having been sold out of service [illegible] at the time, being towed out on her last voyage, in charge of her German purchasers.
