Description
This large example is colourful, well-executed and detailed. Historically, it is significant in the features captured including the carpet type and the sitter’s clothes with lace and jewellery. The Renaissance Revival period furniture is fitting with the date of this work. The well-disciplined child is one of a family of means that could well-afford commissioning this work. The artist, most likely local to the now Kitchener-Waterloo region, definitely had training in art. Style in line with portraits of the Aesthetic period with the floral carpet depicted. There seems to be a minor two inch tear that has been supported from the back with tape. There appears to be very little paint loss to the work on the front. There is a small hole, about one quarter inch diameter in the upper right quadrant of the background. There is varnish crystalization in some areas - noted on the stool upholstery and couch. The oil paint seems unaffected by this. It is in very good condition overall. J. Trussler. Marked: "Finished Sept 15th, 1882 By J. Trussler, Berlin Ont." on reverse. Oil paint on canvas. Canadian. c1880. 52" H x 35" W. CODE-PFA
