Item Details
Description
Russian Icon of the Virgin and Child, 19th c., with a brass oklad, she holds the child Jesus in her arms, H.- 7 in., W.- 5 5/8 in. Provenance: The Estate of Robert and Margaret Reily, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Condition
Condition consistent with age. The toka is not nailed into the icon. It comes off and you can see that the underside is painted brown, possibly a dark varnish. The right and left side of the toka have some kind of light colored paint or residue left behind. The toka has completely tarnished, but the golden halo looks like it was cleaned more recently. The painting has one 3/8 inch gash to piece on proper left side of the halo, which was made by the underside of the toka. There is additional wearing to halo on Christ, as well as, on the top of Mary’s halo. All of these were caused by the toka rubbing against the painting. Craquelure is visible throughout and has several areas of loss, particularly on the corners of the painting. The top right corner has a large area of loss. The proper left side (or right side) of Mary’s left arm has a scratch and some paint loss. Her hand, sleeve and bottom of cloak have areas of paint loss. Regardless of condition, this is a charming example with patina. ______________________________________________________________________________ ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD "AS IS." NO STATEMENT REGARDING CONDITION OF ANY ITEM, WHETHER IT IS MADE ORALLY AT THE AUCTION OR ANY OTHER TIME, OR IN WRITING IN THE CATALOGUE OR ELSEWHERE, SHALL BE DEEMED TO BE A WARRANTY, REPRESENTATION, OR ASSUMPTION OF LIABILITY.
