Description
A Paint Decorated Wooden Sled
Late 19th Century
wooden seat painted red with a white floral motif and Gen. Howard in white letters at center, and runners painted a blue/green. Â
Length 36 x width 16 inches.
Though the exact identity of "Gen. Howard" is uncertain, it may refer to Union General and Medal of Honor recipient Oliver O. Howard (1830-1909). Howard lost his arm while serving as a brigade commander in the Army of the Potomac, and later was a commander in the Western Theater. He is perhaps most recognized for his efforts to lead the Freedmen's Bureau which came under his charge in 1865.
