Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. mid-20th century CE. A remarkable wooden icon depicting Christ holding a globus cruciger - an orb surmounted by a cross - in his left hand and making a gesture of benediction with his right hand. Painted in egg tempera on wood, the beautiful piece boasts vivid hues, such as Christ's scarlet tunic and navy robe, as well as the porcelain-like peach hue of his skin and Byzantine blue of the sky. A pair of cherubim flank the tranquil deity, while several Cyrillic inscriptions surround him. Size: 10" W x 13.4" H (25.4 cm x 34 cm)

Icons (icon means "image" in Greek) are sacred objects within the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. Found in homes as well as churches, these painted images depict holy persons and saints as well as illustrate scenes from the Scriptures. Icons are not worshiped but are instead venerated for their ability to focus the power of an individual's prayer to God. As such they are truly 'windows into heaven.'
