East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. 1603 to 1868 CE. A hand-carved wooden spear staff known as a yari with a lengthy wooden staff body, slender cords wrapped around the midsection, and an upper body decorated with hundreds of petite nacre fragments. The top of the pole body once housed a narrow spear blade, though the conical, forged-iron end cap served as an emergency weapon when the yari blade was damaged. Size: 42.2" L x 0.8" W (107.2 cm x 2 cm)
Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in September 2016; ex-private Onomichi, Hiroshima, Japan collection

Condition
Original blade missing. Losses to some inlaid nacre fragments as shown. Minor loosening to thread around upper body, and light abrasions to wood component. Nice patina throughout.
