Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, Majapahit Empire, ca. 12th century CE. A fine ensemble of pottery torsos of hollow figures, all boasting abstract features and expressive poses. Possibly representing a simian, the largest torso displays a slender body and large shoulders supporting a round head with a wide, open mouth and annular eyes, all capped by a pointed coiffure. Alternatively, the second torso displays a chubby face with round cheeks, a broad nose, ovoid eyes, and a closed mouth, all adorned by a thick breast plate and huge annular earspools. Last, the redware head exhibits a stylized visage with slender eyes beneath a protruding brow, a triangular nose, and an incised smile. A flat-topped headdress crowns the charming face, as a pair of lengthy ears flank it. Size (of largest): 3.4" W x 4.1" H (8.6 cm x 10.4 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.
