Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
South East Asia, Indonesia, Java, Majapahit Dynasty, ca. 15th century CE. A charming handmade pottery head of a smiling man. The lively visage features a full-lipped mouth, smiling and open as though mid-laugh, a broad nose with a low root, and two squinting, slender eyes. Lightly incised lines on his cheeks and forehead represent wrinkles, indicating that he is an older man. His long ears flank his jovial countenance, both showcasing extended lobes weighed down by large, circular ornaments; a symbol of holiness in Hindu and Buddhist cultures. His centrally-parted incised hair draws back from this brow, curling behind his ears. A remarkable artistic embodiment of peace and joy. Size: 5" W x 5.875" H (12.7 cm x 14.9 cm); 8.625" H (21.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Adam Partridge collection, from a Cheshire, England estate sale
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
