Description
4th-5th century A.D. A bronze signet ring composed of a square bezel with angled sides and a simple circular hoop, the bezel with confronted male and female bust, the female wearing a tunic, the male bust bearded and wearing a chlamys fastened by a stylised fibula, cross below. Cf. Marzinzik, S., Masterpieces. Early medieval art, London, 2013, pl.14, for the bezel. 5.27 grams, 24.03 mm overall, 18.29 mm internal diameter (approximate size British O 1/2, USA 7 1/4, Europe 15.61, Japan 15) (1 in.) German art market before 2000. With a European gentleman living in the UK. Property of a Surrey gentleman. In the Eastern Roman Empire, great emphasis was given to the representation of the Imperial couple. Following this iconography, private individuals were inspired by this custom and had wedding or signet rings similar to our specimen, invoking the gifts of harmony and peace that God had already granted to the sovereigns.
