Description
2nd-3rd century A.D. A hair pin made of bone with cylindrical shaft, twisted head and plain body with three grooves, tapering to a sharp pointed tip. See Bartus, D., ‘Roman Bone Hairpins With Golden Head’ in Kuzmová, K., Kvetánová, I. (eds.), In honour of Werner Jobst. Anodos. Studies of the Ancient World, 8 (2008) pp.35-43, fig.1, type 3, for similar heads. 6.2 grams, 17.5 cm long (6 7/8 in.) Acquired on the UK art market, 2000s. Property of an Essex gentleman. Roman hairpins were generally made of bone or metal, and occasionally of jet, wood or glass. Besides these hairpins, there are some pieces manufactured from two or three variously combined materials: wooden hairpins with bronze head, bone hairpins with jet head or silver ones with gold head, are just a few examples of the used variations.
