Description
6th-8th century A.D. A large woven textile fragment of linen and wool with a horizontal decorative band (segmentum), depicting human characters alternating with columns, a band of geometric pattern and tendrils above; five small clavi and orbiculi descending from the band and a further bigger clavus with orbiculus to the left side, all within a meander border; the bigger orbiculus decorated by a bird in profile; mounted on a linen-covered backing board. See Del Francia Barocas, L., Museo dell'Alto Medioevo, Roma, I materiali copti (The Coptic Materials, in Italian), Roma, 1994, nos.53, 55, 59, 62. 860 grams, 38.5 x 38.5 cm (15 1/8 x 15 1/8 in.)
