Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 5th to 6th century CE. A handwoven cotton or linen textile fragment with a solid green tabby weave surrounding a rondel motif in warm hues of red and ochre threads and solid bands of beige. The colorful motif consists of a stylized flowering tree or shrub with two birds, which likely symbolizes the Tree of Life, a popular symbol from Christianity. The green is a bright, mossy hue, and contrasts beautifully with the motif and all is framed in a modern glass frame. Size (textile): 13.5" L x 14" W (34.3 cm x 35.6 cm); (frame): 16.25" L x 20.5" W (41.3 cm x 52.1 cm)
