Carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph taken in Yorktown, VA in 1864. 
This intriguing outdoor view is a vignette of southern life during the Civil War and rare visual evidence of multiracial interaction before the passage of the 13th Amendment. In the photograph, an African American man can be seen walking up the steps past another man, who looks to be holding items for sale. Behind him is a broadside.  Above the doorway, the sign "BAKERS" can be clearly read.  On the porch, a white woman overlooks the action beside an African American nanny holding a white child.
Whether the African American subjects shown were employed or enslaved is unknown.  African American and white subjects are rarely seen together interacting in photography during the Civil War- this is especially the case with southern photography.
Verso bears the imprint of photographer William Bath of the "New Orleans Gallery"  in Richmond, Virginia,  "4 doors below St. Charles Hotel."  Image housed in separated CDV sleeve with an ink inscription.
