Wonderful cabinet card photograph of a team of oxen hauling hay in Deadwood, Dakota Territory made by J.C.H. Grabill. John C. H. Grabill was an American photographer, known for his historical photographs, most of which were taken in South Dakota. This particular view, made in 1888, is labeled “No. 1301. In Market. Eight yoke of oxen haul five tons of hay to Deadwood. The largest load ever in market.” The verso contains Grabill’s backmark:
“Colorado, Wyoming and Dakota views, including cattle scenes in Wyoming and Dakota. For sale by J.C.H Greybill, Deadwood and Sturgis, Dakota Terr.”
Photo is in very good condition, with great clarity and tone. This is a superb view of a true “wild west” American town.
