Description
Fantastic group of three items: a piece of wool bunting cut from a Confederate National flag, a 10-dollar Confederate bank note captured at Appomattox, and an 1880 letter describing the two items and verifying their authenticity.
The letter states the flag bunting is “a piece of the Confederate Flag that flaunted over the Rebel Capitol in Richmond, VA., cut into pieces for distribution as a significant memento of the war.” The bank note appears to have been captured outside of Appomattox Courthouse, as part of the “funds of the army” sequestered by Gen. Robert E. Lee.
The author of the letter was a man named Abram Burtt Lawrence. Lawrence served as an officer during the Civil War, receiving several conspicuous promotions and brevets, and left the service in 1866 having gained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Wonderful war trophies with stellar provenance.
