Carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph of Confederate General Felix Kirk Zollicoffer (1812-1862). The image's mount is inscribed “Zollicoffer - Rebel Gen’l - Killed” in period ink.
Zollicoffer was a successful newspaper publisher and prominent politician from Tennessee who did not initially support secession, but nonetheless volunteered his services to the Provisional Army of Tennessee at the outbreak of war. He was soon commissioned a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. Zollicoffer was killed at the Battle of Mill Springs in 1862, the first Confederate general to die in the Western Theatre of the war.
