Description
A fine and scarce Mexican-American War veteran’s badge, engraved on the reverse to P. W. Johnson, who served with the 1st Mississippi Infantry. The front of the two-piece badge features a rectangular bar that reads “Presented March 1876/National Association of Veterans” over a shield design that features the insignia of the four branches of US service at that time. Names of various Mexican-American War battles are also listed around the edges of the shield.
The reverse of the shield is finely engraved to P.W. Johnson. Johnson’s regiment, the 1st Mississippi, was commanded by none other than Jefferson Davis, who would of course go on to become the President of the Confederacy during the Civil War. Records indicated that Johnson was wounded “severely” during the Siege of Monterey, with Davis himself noting Johnson’s wound.
The badge itself is in excellent condition overall. Its ribbon is a bit worn and has disconnected from the badge.
