Natasha Turovsky is one of the great artists to come from Canada in many generations. Starting as a professional violinist, Natasha discovered visual arts thirty years ago. She decided to pursue her passion by enrolling in the Fine Arts program at Concordia University in Montreal in 1992, where she specialized in painting and printmaking. Natasha Turovsky has had over sixty solo and group art exhibits in Barcelona, Cleveland, Boston, New York, Miami, Hong-Kong and all over Canada. In 2006, together with her father Yuli Turovsky and digital artists Gael Hollard and Marie-Josee Auclair, Natasha made a short film called Pictures at an Exhibition. (Choreographed paintings), an animation based on the paintings she created to the music of Modest Mussorgskys Pictures at an Exhibition. Natasha Turovsky is exclusively represented by ART AVENUE GALLERIES in Sarasota, Florida. ArtAvenueFlorida.com Created by ArtAvenueNatasha Turovsky created the singular canvas painting titled "Night at the Opera" in 2005, in the old Montreal Post office on Saint Catherine Street, Montreal. The Painting was commissioned by the Montreal Opera. It was used for the Canadian premiere of the opera by Sir William Walton called “THE BEAR”. It was to be used as the backdrop “prop” for the performances by I Musici de Montreal. The famous chamber orchestra consists of 14 string musicians, conducted by Natasha's father Yuli Turovsky, mother, Eleonor Turovsky, (Concert-Master), and Natasha on violin. The group has performed hundreds of concerts yearly for 25 seasons, along with a discography of over 70 commercial and acclaimed recordings, spanning 15th - 20th century composer giants. It was a fun and interesting schedule Natasha underwent, as the former Montreal Post office was at the time, converted to a gay-disco nightclub. Natasha had to work crazy hours all around the "partying and noisy" environment, not to mention horrible light conditions. I recall a large black curtain divider that was used to separate the painting area from the disco dancing floor area. All the hours of work became so erratic, sometimes she would work two nights straight in a row, when the club was closed. The start of the project was how to find a large enough singular canvas? the canvas was donated by the Montreal Opera. It was manufactured by the Strauss Levi's® 501® traditionalworkwear fabric, which was patented back in 1873. France has an interesting tie to the fabric that goes back more than a century earlier. Serge de Nimes fabric was a blend of wool and cotton known in France prior to the 17th century. The size of the block sheet of canvas is 11 meters (roughly 33 feet) by 5 meters (roughly 17 feet tall) This proved ideal. The canvas is very pliable and with all the many thin layers of charcoal and oil substrates Natasha used, produced a meticulously crafted painting. The canvas easily folds up in quarters, or can be shipped rolled up. My first glance at the finished painting was with my son Alex, who is a long time friend of the whole Turovsky family. In fact, it is Alex who we owe in meeting Natasha, as he was invited toa music festival and competition at age 8 to the Centre d' Arts, Mont Orford, Canada. Natasha's father, Yuli, and mother, Eleonor were the directors of the music festival. While visiting there, we all met at the log cabin, where her paintings lay all over the floor. I discovered Natasha's amazing paintings, and immediately booked an art exhibit with her in our flagship gallery, ART AVENUE GALLERIES, Cleveland, Ohio. Alex and I were just stunned and amazed at how magnificent the painting was. We were on a scaffold type set up, and had to rig up some spot lights to view the captivating "audience" in this truly magnificent painting. It became clear that this painting would make her famous. The painting starts out with a gigantic viewing from the stage performers point of view. Looking out at the audience, from left to right, one sees the obvious Horse in the balcony, audience left. moving left to right we see a child with a rag doll, a jester reading the book onSalieri, who was Mozart's nemesis in the movie Amadeus. Moving on there are two cy-cloptic dual partners, a person clapping out of line, and a few other interesting audience utterances. Most notable, at the very lower right of the canvas, you will notice three people, at the far righta music critic who cannot hear ??, an art critic with an upside down head ?? and a social editor with no mouth. What a befitting tribute to all critics ! Natasha Turovsky captivates all audiences with A Night At the Opera. This painting will visit many concert halls, museums, and Opera houses on it's quest to find it's ultimate home. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy this most amusing and sophisticated paintings, of the many great works by the endearing artist Natasha Turovsky.
