Description
A vintage photo signed and inscribed in German by Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965), the Nobel Prize-winning humanitarian, translated as "With good [?] thoughts Albert Schweitzer" along the bottom. Pencil inscribed "Günsbach, Alsace Lorraine / August 25, 1955" verso. Expected wear including minor photo crazing throughout, an isolated closed tear along the top at upper left, gentle curling, and partial paper loss verso, else good to very good. 4.5" x 3.25."
Schweitzer spent his childhood in Gunsbach, Alsace Lorraine, where his father served as longtime pastor of the local Lutheran-Evangelical church. In 1928, Schweitzer purchased a stone house in Gunsbach that he kept until his death, though he last visited it in 1959. The house is now the Musée Albert Schweitzer, a museum, library, and archive.
Albert Schweitzer was truly a modern Renaissance man; an accomplished organist, musical theorist, preservationist, theologian, church deacon, doctor, and philanthropist, he was awarded the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize. Schweitzer is perhaps best known for his association with the Paris Missionary Society’s mission at Lambaréné in present-day Gabon (formerly French Equatorial Africa), where he established a hospital in 1913. The Albert Schweitzer Hospital operated on revenue generated by Schweitzer’s organ concerts and other fundraising efforts. Schweitzer would divide his time between the hospital and Europe for the next fifty years.
