Description
An original presentation card featuring a photograph of German physicist Max Planck (1858-1947), signed, dated, and annotated in German with over 30 words in his hand underneath. Written in Berlin-Grunewald, Germany and dated June 15, 1938. The presentation card, which is of double-weight cream stock with deckled edges, is mounted with a matte black and white photograph of Planck, signed in stone at lower right as "Atelier Binz." The card features a partly printed form message in German below, reading in part, "For the friendly congratulations on my eightieth birthday, I would like to give my heartfelt thanks…" Planck has added a personalized message below, which is untranslated, and signed his name as "M. Planck." A minor water spot affects the "8" of the year 1938. Expected light surface wear including a few isolated edge scuffs, else near fine. The card overall measures 4.5" x 7." Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA Authentication Services (Newport Beach, California), and a Certificate of Authenticity from R&R Enterprises Autograph Auctions (Amherst, New Hampshire.)
Planck had celebrated his 80th birthday three weeks earlier, on April 23, 1938. Planck was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics some 20 years earlier, in 1918, for his discovery of energy quanta while studying black-body radiation. Planck's important research revealed groundbreaking facts about the atomic and subatomic world.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
