Queen Victoria Military Appt. Signed During Crimean War

QUEEN VICTORIA. Partially Printed Document Signed, “Victoria Rg”, 1p, 13.75" x 9.25", the Court of Windsor, March 1, 1855. Just below her signature, Victoria’s beautiful pale blue embossed paper royal seal remains fully intact. The royal seal partially covers a dark blue embossed revenue stamp for thirty-one pounds, five shillings, fifty-six pence. Countersigned at lower right by Fox Maule-Ramsay, 11th Earl of Dalhousie, The Lord Panmure (1801-1874), “Panmure”, as War Secretary. Endorsed at verso. Expected folds, small tear at the upper right edge, soiling at verso, else near Fine condition.

The appointment, in part, "Victoria by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen Defender of the Faith &c. To Our Trusty and well beloved Robert Abraham Logan Esquire Greeting We do by these Presents Constitute and Appoint you to be Assistant Adjutant of a Depot Battalion from the first of December 1854…”

Robert Abraham Logan (1824-1890) was born in Nuns Island, Galway, Ireland. He was the only son of Patrick Logan, a Captain in the 57th Regiment of Foot. Logan settled in New South Wales with his family in 1825 and joined the 41st Regiment of Foot as an Ensign in 1841. He transferred to his father's old regiment, the 57th Regiment of Foot, one month later; became a Lieutenant in 1843, and was promoted to Major in June 1855. He was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1865. Logan was promoted to Major General in 1881 and retired with the honorary rank of Lieutenant General in 1882.

Victoria (1819-1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from June 20, 1837 until her death in 1901. Known as the Victorian era, her reign of 63 years and seven months was longer than any previous British monarch. It was a period of industrial, political, scientific, and military change within the United Kingdom, and was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire. In 1876, the British Parliament voted to grant her the additional title of Empress of India. In her later years, Victoria became the symbol of the British Empire. Both the Golden (1887) and Diamond (1897) Jubilees, held to celebrate the 50th and 60th anniversaries of the Queen's accession, were marked with great displays and public ceremonies.
