Description
Here are two rare plans for London's reconstruction after the great fire (September 2-6, 1666) which burnt 12,000 houses. The plans are by Sir J Evelyn, with the top plan created soon after the fire on 13 Spetember, 166 and the bottom plan three months later. Evelyn believed that post fire there was an opportunity to improve and straighten the road systems and create a better London. But ultimately the plans, along with the seaparate plans by Sir C Wren were rejected as it was felt that speed of recrontruction was more important and the old foundations were used to erect brick buildings. Both plans locate St. Paul's Church, the Tower of London, the (London) Bridge, etc. This is a republished version of the original plans in 1748 by Sumptibus Societat Antiquar Lond. (London Antiquarian Society).
