Description
Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast of Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz) culture, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. An interesting set of 3 hand-built pottery figures from the ancient Veracruz culture. First is a tripodal anthropomorphic figure wearing a lengthy loincloth while holding both arms to slender legs. Much of the head is comprised of a stylized bird perched atop the clavicle area with outstretched wings and a pointed beak. Next is a human coast watcher sitting with folded legs, straight arms, and a raised head with an elaborate headdress that sits high on the brow. The largest is a tall anthropomorphic coyote whistle figure wearing a studded necklace below a lengthy snout, almond-shaped eyes, and a fan-shaped headdress. A low-pitched tone emanates from a hole in the back when air is blown into the mouthpiece located behind the right shoulder. Size of largest (coyote): 3.5" W x 8.6" H (8.9 cm x 21.8 cm)
