Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. This is a fine textile panel comprised of tightly woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in earthen tones of beige, brown accented by dark blue and red hues. A forward-facing stylized figure stands with two staffs or weapons in his hands, adorned in headdresses of a large, flared tumi shape. An important deity in the Andes region, the Staff God has been interpreted as the precursor to the sun, moon, and thunder deity pantheon of the Inca. The figure represents a deity that was shared and recreated throughout the Andes as a popular guardian spirit. Above is a 3-pronged linear motif. The textile is mounted and protected in a glass and wood display frame. Size (textile): 16" L x 6" W (40.6 cm x 15.2 cm); (frame): 22" L x 12" W (55.9 cm x 30.5 cm)
