Description
Kitagawa Utamaro II (Japan, 1789 - 1830). Woodblock print. Mimachi Ritual of Benten Shrine at Shinobazu in Edo. Tenpo Period (1815 - 32). In painted wood frame. This print was created prior to the 1855 Ansei Edo earthquake that destroyed much of modern day Tokyo. Many of the original woodblocks were destroyed in fires caused by the earthquake. Since this print was created prior to the earthquake, the original woodblock was most likely used to create this print. 10-1/4" x 15" ; frame and matte 2-1/2". Foxing and some creases to paper. 1/2" tear to upper right corner. 1/2" loss to area of sky. Water stains to matte and backing. KE IMPORTANT: Before bidding, please read the terms and conditions.
