"Interior Design", 2016, by Harlan Brandon (African-American, b. 1954) large-scale contemporary mixed media with acrylic paint, spray paint and BEHR color swatches on watercolor paper, framed by artist with signature in lower left-hand corner. Brandon was born in Baltimore and raised in Brooklyn. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a BFA in Fine Art and Marketing in 1977. In 1982, he was the recipient of the prestigious, Footwear Choice Award by Fairchild Publications, owners of Footwear News and Women’s Wear Daily, which started him on the road to fashion illustration and eventually his shoe designing career. Over the years, Harlan has done fashion illustrations for Vogue, Essence and the Italian Trade Commission. He was the footwear designer for FILA and was the owner of his own design firm Harlan Brandon Shoes, which sold to Macy’s and small independent retailers. As an artist, Brandon has been honing his skills in post-war abstract expressionism for several years. He is known for a relentlessly evolving body of images that consider both the history and technical tools of post-war abstract expression. Brandon was most influenced by his teacher and mentor, Henry Geldzahler, Modernist art historian and curator for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, who gave him great insight into New York City’s modern art world.
