Item Details
Description
A brown glazed Sukhothai Stoneware jar from Thailand that has a very ceramic folk art look that is still modern in its simplicity. The stoneware bottle used dark clay that was not super refined, and the impurities created minute pin holes. The glaze is dark, almost black, and fairly thin with the ridges at the neck showing through the glaze. There are handles on each side of the neck. The mouth opening is small in comparison to the body. The interior of the bottle is not glazed although the glaze does go from the mouth to the neck interior. The raised foot is cut, squared and unglazed. The base is also unglazed with a central circular indent or stamp. The jar was possibly produced near the Songkhram river where a good deal of brown glazed loop handle pots of this type were made, particularly with this glaze. The glaze was introduced to the region, as well as Cambodia and Vietnam toward the end of the Song dynasty and was in steady use well into the 20th C.Note: We have shown this item to Peter Combs from Bidamount, a highly regarded specialist in Asian ceramics (and much more) and he felt comfortable that this jug is authentic).MEASUREMENTS7" diameter x 6 1/2" tall. Weights 2 lb 10.2 oz (1195 g)CONDITIONThere are no cracks, chips, or breaks. The glaze is still in good shape, a nice entire piece. There is considerable wear to the ridges .I love this very old bottle for the almost mid-century ceramic look. I could see this bottle in a modern décor. The form is old but modern at the same time.ITEM IDPot-2944COLORBlack, BrownTYPEHand Made, Hand Painted, StonewareORIGINAsia • AsianPURPOSEJugsITEM TYPEAntique
