Description
(20th Century, or possibly earlier). Antique style bronze figural sculpture of a seated lion. Modeled on its haunches with front paws outstretched, head turned to look at viewer. Stylistic features suggest the region of Laconia in southern Greece, famed for the ancient city of Sparta. The short and incised treatment of the lions ruff, the flamelike lines incised on the body to indicate patterns of fur, and the rounded face and ears are hallmarks of Laconian style. A similar piece is held in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum (Pacific Palisades, CA).
