Eugene Montgomery was a Texas born artist who specialized in portraiture. During the 40's and 50's he painted a series of murals for Sears department stores around the country, including the Sear's located on SW Military Drive (San Antonio, Tx). Titled 'The San Antonio Story', the mural depicts San Antonio history, featuring scenes from the defeat of Mexican General Santa Ana, to scenes of Fiesta. The murals were painted on several panels of rolled canvas affixed to the walls. During a remodeling of the store in 1984, the mural was taken down with the intention of being donated to a local museum. However, the work never arrived and was thought to be lost. It wasn't until 2014 that the panels of rolled up canvas were discovered in a city-owned storage facility. 'The San Antonio Story' is currently in the possession of the Institute of Texas Culture, where it's panels are being researched.
