Clarence Stringfield (American, 1903-1976), Folk Art Carving of a Pheasant

carved pine, the fowl expressively depicted spread winged with beak agape, standing on an integral carved rectangular wood base, ink signed to underside "C. Stringfield."
12 1/2 x 17 x 5 in.
Native to Tennessee, Clarence Stringfield is recognized for his carved softwood folk art figural subjects of every day life. After contracting tuberculosis in 1934, he took to carving and continued until his death in 1976. His works a featured in many prominent public and private collections. Stringfield's "Bathing Beauty," as well as a carving of the former first lady, Lady Bird Johnson, are both included in Smithsonian American Art Museum.
