Description
The Carpenter by Stuart Scott Somerville is an oil on panel depicting a man sitting down inside a barn or cabin whittling on wood. Very unique subject for Somerville. Painting is signed lower left by Somerville and dated. Date looks like 1928. On verso, is the old handwritten gallery label from Claridge Gallery out of Ashford, Middlesex. Label read No XXV on top left corner, Claridge Gallery with 1930 under in the center of label and below, Artist: Stuart Scott Sommerville, The Old Ford Farm, Ashford Middlesex, Title. After title, the writing is crossed out. Additionally on verso attached via string to the hanger is a 1997 appraisal from Dixon & Dixon of Royal that was prepared for the current owner of this piece, John Watkins. Within the appraisal description is the general summary of the artwork by Stuart, the title The Carpenter, general art details of the piece, a summary of the Stuart Scott Somerville, and an appraised value noted at $1,550 as of January 2, 1997 On the back of the appraisal is a photo of this painting adhered to a second page. All paperwork noted comes with this item. See photos. Dimension of wood panel is approximately 10 inches by 12 inches. Painting is set inside a intricate frame measuring approximately 18.25 inches by 20.25 inches. Provenance: 1st found record is on verso from 1930, Claridge Gallery out of Middlesex. Second record from a collector named John Watlkins out of Stamford, CT per January 2, 1997 appraisal done by Dixon & Dixon of Royal. See photos of appraisal paperwork. Known for landscapes and still life as well as an explorer, Somerville was a well known English artist. During the British Museum Expedition between 1934 through 1935 Stuart Somerville was the official artist on display. Somerville's work has also been published including Mountains of the Moon in 1937. Good overall condition regarding frame, painting, paperwork, and gallery label. Some small rub line marks noticed on the painting.
