Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque), ca. 0 to 500 CE. A hand-built pottery figure showing a mother holding her child, seated in what appears to be a wicker chair that is flanked by two birds. The details of both the woman and baby's clothing as well as their personal adornments are clear, including the mother's elaborate headdress and enormous earrings. The finery on the baby demonstrates how important children were in the society. The blue details on this figure are fairly unique in Jamacoaque pottery and are rather attractive. Repaired from multiple pieces, with restoration to mother's arms, areas of base, and several areas of zigzagging chair backing, and resurfacing with overpainting along new material and break lines. Losses to areas of mother's headdress, some fingers, and areas of base as shown. Child figure is perhaps not original to this composition. Chips, nicks, and abrasions to mother, infant, birds, chair, and base, with fading to original pigment, light encrustations, and softening to some finer details. Nice preservation to overall figural form. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory label beneath mother's legs.
