This African American cane came from a house in Jefferson City, MO where another by the same hand is known to exist in the same area. This remarkable cane has many of the images and shapes described in George Meyer's book, 'American Folk Art Canes,' in a chapter entitled 'Defining The African American Cane.' The Maker's use of the serpent, the Frog, diamond shapes, upholstery tacks, a dark surface, mirror and mythological figures, all point to its African American origin. In its original state, this cane is rare and dates from 1850-1865.
